This song came together as quickly as anything I've ever written. I won't say how much time, because I don't want to set myself up for any fairly obvious jokes... :) But suffice it so say that, to some extent, I was channeling my inner Oasis <---I read an interview once where one of the Gallagher's was saying they write whatever words come to mind.
I started with the chorus, and initially, I was just mumbling some stuff and trying to fit syllables to the melody that I was working with. However, I soon found myself with some very cohesive ideas and everything took shape very quickly after that. It was exciting for me as I definitely have pieces of other songs that I have been playing with for months if not years and can't seem to gain much traction.
Ultimately, and I assume this is also fairly obvious, I see this as a critique of not only certain western ideologies, but also some of the more disgusting/saddening western cultural realities. One could perhaps argue that culture is simply a manifestation of ideology, but I've not hammered out how exactly I think all that works...
lyrics
red fish/blue fish turns me on
and a holy court saint on the run
cut em down get high and low,
echopsychobabblers all
the western man, I'll do as I am told
and I'll do it on my own
yeah, the western man, I'll do it on my own
although the warnings
tell me no man is an island or alone
slit red throats, bruised ids and arms,
the common themes are the greedy marks
cold fusion haunts come crashing down
disposability's the charm
shady lights the streets at night,
all hail the green beloved envies
fortunate fame, or so they say
yeah, we all are gone away
yeah, we all are led astray
